Heir to a Fortune
When the Wuhu Shipyard in China launched a 27,000 tonne dw bulk carrier towards the end of June this year, it was opening a new chapter in the history of GTR Campbell, the legendary standard ship design consultancy. The new vessel, the first of six for Navarone Greece/Canaforest Montreal, was also the first Fortune Mk II to take the water.
The 21,500 tonne dw Fortune was of course one of the most successful designs to come out of GTR Campbell back in the early 1970s and was a handy-sized bulker built in substantial numbers throughout the decade. Today's Fortune is heir to this design but incorporates all manner of changes and developments that reflect the progress made in shipping and ship design over the last 30 years.
The Fortune Mk II is designed as a multi-purpose, geared dry cargo and self-trimming dry bulk cargo carrier and is suitable for trading on the Great Lakes/St Lawrence Seaway. It incorporates wide hatch covers and is arranged with six holds; principal dimensions are given in Table 1. The design is classed by Det Norske Veritas and includes an ice class notation.
The six cargo holds are designed to accommodate a uniform loading of 20 tonnes/m2 and the inner bottom is strengthened for grab discharge. Cargo handling is facilitated by the three electro-hydraulic jib cranes, each rated at 40 tonnes on hook, and positioned between Nos 1 ad 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 holds respectively. Hatch covers are end-folding steel units, hydraulically operated and suitable for a loading of 2.5 tonnes/m2.
Propulsion of the Fortune Mk II comes from a MAN B & W 7S42MC diesel engine rated at 6,450 kW at 122 rev/min and driving a four bladed propeller. Service speed is 14 knots and endurance is around 45 days, equivalent to a range of about 15,000 sea miles. Maneuverability is enhanced by the fitting of a 900 kW bow thruster, and auxiliary power comes from three 680 kW diesel generators.
The design is conventional with an accommodation block aft providing facilities for a crew of 25 and, in line with current thinking, incorporates a free fall lifeboat at the aft end.
