GTR Campbell (GTRC), famed designer of standard ships including the Freedom, Friendship, Fortune and more recently Fantasy, is currently in the midst of a programme of bulk carrier production that in total numbers 24 ships of four designs, all building in Chinese yards.
The GTRC designs in production and order books are as follows:
Festiva - a 27,000 tonne dw design - eight on order, four delivered at New Century Shipbuilding
Fortune Mk II - a 27,000 tonne dw design - six on order, three delivered at Wuhu Shipyard
Valiant - a 32,500 tonne dw design - six on order, three delivered at Xingang Shipyard
Galaxy - a 51,000 tonne dw design - four on order, three delivered at New Century Shipbuilding.
A measure of the intense activity that GTRC is involved in is highlighted by the events at the beginning of May 2003 - on May 9th the latest Valiant was launched while next day the fifth Festiva was delivered. Both vessels are for the account of Dockendale Shipping, of Nassau, and have been chartered long term, the Festiva to MUR South Africa and the Valiant to IVS South Africa (The UnicornGrindrod group). The sixth Festiva is scheduled for delivery on the 25th of May and the fourth Galaxy on June 30th. GTRC carries out the construction supervision of these vessels on behalf of various Owners. GTRC working closely in conjunction with all parties has ensured on time or early delivery.

Festiva design :-
The Festiva is a geared 27,000 tonne dw bulk carrier design intended for world wide trade with five self trimming cargo holds, No 3 of which is shorter than the others and arranged with a double hull for the carriage of ballast water. Built to ABS class, the Festiva is suitable for a tank top loading of 23 tonnes/m2 and is equipped with four 30-tonne electro-hydraulic cranes with provision for grabbing.

The Valiant :-
This design is a slightly larger vessel which is arranged with a double hull to meet the latest thinking on bulk carrier safety. Again with five holds and classed by ABS, it is also equipped with four 30-tonne electro-hydraulic cranes but differs from its slightly smaller sister as this design is built to Ice class D0.
Further details of both designs are given below. Meanwhile GTRC is continuing to develop new and advanced designs to meet the needs of owners tomorrow. Key feature of the latest designs is the adoption of a double hull as proposed by many sectors of the industry as a means of reducing the problems of damage and corrosion that have resulted in the loss of many older vessels in the past. Details of the new designs are scheduled to be released in the near future.
